About Remontoir

Remontoir gathers what established watch publications and YouTube creators say about a watch and shows where they agree and where they don’t. It is an independent project by Nicholas De Leon, built in Tucson, Arizona. He can be reached by email or on LinkedIn.

How it works

A language model reads each review and records the reviewer’s opinions, each backed by a short excerpt we check against the original. Everything you see counted, from “8 of 11” to the verdict itself, is calculated by ordinary code from those readings, never written by the model. The full method explains what counts and what doesn’t.

Remontoir summarises; the reviewers did the work. Every point links back to the review it came from, and we keep excerpts short so the originals are still worth reading and watching. See every source.

The name

A remontoir (say it “ruh-mon-twahr”) is one of watchmaking’s quieter refinements. A mainspring gives out its power unevenly, strong when fully wound and weaker as it runs down. A remontoir sits between the mainspring and the rest of the movement, storing a little of that energy and releasing it in small, even measures, so the watch keeps steady time however much power is left. In French the word also means the crown you wind a watch with.

The name was chosen first for how it sounds: an elegant word from deep inside the watch. The fit came later. Reviews arrive unevenly, a flood around a big launch and a trickle after it, and Remontoir tries to turn all of that into something steady.

Independence

Remontoir isn’t affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by any watch brand, retailer, publication or creator mentioned on the site. Brand and model names belong to their owners, and watch photographs are the brands’ own press images.

Creator Consensus is built only from what reviewers said. Prices, retailers and any commercial relationship are kept apart from it and never affect it.

Contact

Creators. If we’ve misread your review, attributed something to you that you didn’t say, or you’d rather your work weren’t included, please get in touch. Include a link to the watch page and we’ll put it right.

Brands. Corrections to specifications, prices or images are welcome at the same address. They’re never used to change the consensus.

Everyone else. This is an early version, and feedback on what’s useful, missing or wrong is the most helpful thing you can send. Send feedback.

Privacy

There are no accounts. The watches you save or skip, and when you last visited (so we can point out watches added since), are stored in your own browser, and YouTube videos only load from YouTube when you press play. We use Google Analytics to see how Remontoir is used, such as page views, saves and clicks through to reviews. It sets analytics cookies, except in the EU, UK and Switzerland, where it runs without them. There are no ads, and nothing is shared for advertising.
