Creator Consensus

Creator Consensus

Positive

10 reviews: 9 positive, 1 mixed, 0 negative. 10 of 10 recommend it.

Every reviewer likes the design, and most see exceptional value for an in-house automatic, praise compact proportions that suit a wide range of wrists, and enjoy the gilt movement through the caseback. Most also find the recessed crown awkward to wind and set, and several note that the stamped clasp feels thin and that water resistance is modest.

Where they differ. Several reviewers call the design derivative of the Oyster Perpetual, while a couple feel it keeps its own identity despite the Rolex cues. On the bracelet, several find the clasp cheap, while others praise how comfortably the integrated links articulate.

Citizen Tsuyosa Review

ArticleHands-on reviewJul 2025Bilal Khan

PositiveRecommends, with caveats

The reviewer sees the 40mm Tsuyosa as an underrated, solid entry-level integrated-bracelet automatic with an excellent dial and a dependable movement. The main drawbacks are the stamped clasp, loose bracelet tolerances, a hard-to-grip crown and modest 50m water resistance, though price justifies most of these.

Suits: Buyers wanting an affordable, classic, versatile integrated-bracelet mechanical watch

What the review says, point by point
Designpositive
  • Sees the design as more subdued and dressy than a retro sports watch, possibly limiting its cult appeal.
  • Considers the flush 4 o'clock crown a distinguishing touch versus competitors.
  • Prefers the crown's aesthetics even at some cost to ease of use.
Case & proportionsmixed
  • Notes the lug-to-lug is modest for a 40mm case on paper.
  • Warns the fixed center link effectively adds to the case size beyond the stated lug-to-lug.
  • Finds the small crown hard to operate despite the grip notch.
Wearabilitymixed
  • Points out that all visible bracelet links are full 22mm width, making it wear bigger.
  • Credits the 4 o'clock crown with keeping the wearable size under control.
Bracelet & strapmixed
  • Likes the brushed outer and polished center link finishing.
  • Finds the stamped clasp underwhelming, wishing it were milled; calls it the bracelet's biggest weakness.
  • Appreciates the three micro-adjustment holes on the clasp.
  • Considers link tolerances mediocre, with gaps giving a somewhat jangly look.
Dialpositive
  • Values the dial's simplicity and legibility.
  • Likes the raised indices for adding depth and rates the lume as decent.
  • Appreciates the subtle brushed sunray finish across dial colors.
  • Calls the dial and its range of colors excellent.
Originalitymixed
  • Understands why some see a Datejust likeness but finds the dial too traditional for the comparison to hold.
Movementpositive
  • Views the calibre's workhorse reputation as deserved.
  • Reports accuracy well within spec in anecdotal testing.
Finishing & buildmixed
  • Praises alternating brushed and polished case surfaces with crisp chamfers.
  • Describes movement decoration as basic and not much to look at.
  • Likes the industrial, brass-like gold-tone movement finish.
Functionalitynegative
  • Suggests raising water resistance to 100m would make it a real hit.
Versatilitypositive
  • Frames it as a good pick for buyers after a classic, versatile look.
Valuepositive
  • Calls it one of the more underrated value propositions available.
  • Excuses the bracelet and clasp shortcomings given the price.
  • Rates it among the better entry-level value propositions overall.
Compared with
  • Tissot PRX 40mm Powermatic 80: Similar lug-to-lug; PRX is significantly more expensive than the Tsuyosa.
  • Rolex Datejust: Dial resemblance acknowledged but comparison considered a stretch.
  • Omega Railmaster 38mm: Cited as having nearly identical lug-to-lug measurement.
  • Citizen Tsuyosa Small Seconds: Better clasp, movement and finishing; more watch for the money.
  • Citizen Tsuyosa 37mm: More manageable lug-to-lug, but crown juts out more, which is a shame.

Video, 11 minComparisonSep 2023

Strongest Japanese Release of the Year? Citizen Tsuyosa (All Colors)

Video, 9 minHands-on reviewJul 2023

PositiveRecommends, with caveats

Sees the Tsuyosa as a fun, strong, well-sized affordable release with appealing colours and a hacking automatic movement. However, it is derivative of the Rolex OP and Tissot PRX, and poor lume, a cheap movement, and a flimsy bracelet and clasp keep it from being the best value.

Suits: Collectors wanting a slightly smaller integrated-bracelet watch in bold colours

Disclosure: Retailer stock

What they said, point by point
Designpositive
  • Singles out the yellow dial as a highlight among the bright colours. 0:28
  • Names the fumé sunray teal as the personal favourite colourway. 0:28
  • Notes the dials use a saturated sunray finish rather than the lacquer of the Rolex OP. 2:51
Dialnegative
  • Considers the lume weak and a letdown. 8:02
  • Notes the fumé textured blue has cream-toned lume, unlike the other versions. 0:28
Originalitymixed
  • Sees it as a reactionary release with a significantly derivative design. 1:54
  • Believes the concept is unoriginal but still a good idea with room in the market. 7:04
Case & proportionsmixed
  • Likes the case size. 7:04
  • Finds the recessed 4 o'clock crown somewhat hard to wind. 5:11
Wearabilitypositive
  • Considers it a good middle ground between the 35mm and 40mm PRX sizes. 6:07
  • Feels the 40mm case wears like a 38–38.5mm, less dominant but still present. 6:36
Movementmixed
  • Welcomes that the Miyota 8210 now hacks. 5:11
  • Likes the visible gilt-tone movement and considers it good at this price. 5:38
  • Notes the movement is neither beautiful nor well finished, and fairly cheap. 8:02
Bracelet & strapnegative
  • Finds the clasp is pressed and the bracelet flexes noticeably. 8:02
Valuemixed
  • Believes there is much to like for a sub-$400 watch. 7:04
  • Does not consider it the best-value watch in its segment. 7:34
  • Sees another colourful affordable option as good for consumers. 7:34
Compared with
  • Tissot PRX 40mm: Tsuyosa wears smaller and less dominant, like a 38–38.5mm PRX.
  • Tissot PRX Powermatic 80: Tsuyosa is the first true mainstream PRX competitor, cheaper and all-automatic.
  • Rolex Oyster Perpetual: Borrows the OP's bright colourways, with sunray instead of lacquer dials.
  • Longines Big Eye Titanium: Fumé textured blue's cream lume resembles the Big Eye titanium.

Hands-On: Citizen NJ015 Automatic 'Tsuyosa' Watch

ArticleHands-on reviewJul 2023Ripley Sellers

PositiveRecommends, with caveats

The reviewer sees the Tsuyosa as a well-judged, softer-styled affordable integrated-bracelet watch with pleasing dials and strong value. Minor reservations cover the stamped clasp, modest water resistance and the basic movement, all explained by the low price.

Suits: Buyers taking their first step into mechanical watches on a budget

What the review says, point by point

  • Notes a softer, less angular and less aggressive look than other integrated-bracelet watches.
  • Despite Rolex-like cues, the 4 o'clock crown gives it a Japanese character and personality of its own.
Originalitymixed
  • Likens it to a mix of Oyster Perpetual, Oysterquartz and Day-Date design cues.
  • Considers the dial design not especially original.
Dialpositive
  • Finds all colourways aesthetically pleasing.
  • Straightforward layout suits the full range of colours, from vibrant to conservative.
Bracelet & strapmixed
  • Judges the bracelet fully acceptable at this price point.
  • Finds the thin, stamped clasp serviceable but not premium-feeling.
  • More critical of the bracelet because integrated designs limit third-party strap options.
Functionalitymixed
  • Wishes for a higher depth rating for peace of mind at the beach or pool.
Movementmixed
  • Appreciates the distinctive look with gilt components and a signed rotor.
  • Notes a Miyota 9-series movement would offer better performance and a thinner case, though at higher cost.
Valuepositive
  • Considers the amount offered for the budget price its most appealing trait.
  • Priced below nearly all direct competitors.
Versatilitypositive
  • Sees it as a great entry point into mechanical watches with broad mainstream appeal.
Compared with
  • Tissot PRX Powermatic 80: PRX feels slightly more premium, but Tsuyosa costs under two-thirds as much.
  • Audemars Piguet Royal Oak: Tsuyosa is softer and less angular in design.

PositiveRecommends, with caveats

Hands-On With The Citizen NJ0150 — The Perfect Example How A Budget Doesn't Limit Your Freedom

ArticleHands-on reviewAug 2022Jorg Weppelink

Very positiveRecommends, with caveats

Very impressed by the NJ0150, a comfortable, stylish 1970s-inspired watch with clear Rolex cues that still feels like a Citizen. The crown is hard to use and the bracelet finishing is basic, but it is judged outstanding value as an affordable daily wearer.

Suits: Buyers wanting a stylish, comfortable, affordable daily wearer under €300

What the review says, point by point
Designpositive
  • Sees it as fitting perfectly into the popular 1970s-inspired watch trend.
  • Notes the sharp case edges seem to clash with the rounded bracelet, but reports adapting quickly.
  • Considers it a bolder statement than the PRX, with a bright presence.
Dialmixed
  • Likes the dial design, partly because it feels familiar and recalls the Oyster Perpetual.
  • Appreciates that all indexes, even the one by the date, are lumed for low-light reading.
  • Feels the brand name and 'automatic' text placement leave the dial slightly unbalanced.
  • Undecided on the cyclops, though it keeps the watch from feeling predictable.
Case & proportionsmixed
  • Finds the overall dimensions suitable for a wide range of wrist sizes.
  • Considers the recessed crown hard to operate and the watch's biggest flaw.
  • Likes the recessed look but thinks style defeats function here.
Wearabilitypositive
  • Finds the looks, dimensions and comfort make it a joy to wear.
Bracelet & strapmixed
  • Thinks the bracelet style is great but quality is only what the price suggests.
  • Enjoys the jangly feel and sees the imperfect quality as part of the charm.
  • Says the bracelet wraps comfortably around the wrist, with micro-adjust holes in the clasp.
Movementmixed
  • Describes the caliber 8210 as a basic, undecorated movement.
  • Considers measured accuracy just under +20 s/day reasonable given the price.
Finishing & buildmixed
  • Likes the brushed and polished link contrast but notes finishing quality is lacking, forgivable at €279.
Versatilitypositive
  • Sees it as an excellent affordable everyday watch.
Originalitypositive
  • Says despite clear Rolex inspiration, the watch avoids copycat feel.
  • Feels it retains its own Citizen identity on the wrist.
Valuepositive
  • Calls the value for money incredible and says it punches well above its weight.
  • Believes few watches under €500 compete on overall package of looks and comfort.
Compared with
  • Tissot PRX Powermatic 80: PRX more refined overall; NJ0150 bolder with bigger dial and markers.
  • Timex M79: NJ0150 looks much more expensive than this rival.
  • Seiko 5 Sports: NJ0150 looks much more expensive than some Seiko 5 Sports models.
  • Seiko SARB033: NJ0150 has similar potential to become an affordable cult classic.

Getting to grips with the excellent value-for-money Citizen Tsuyosa

ArticleHands-on reviewAug 2022Erik Slaven

Very positiveRecommends

Sees the Tsuyosa as an outstanding bargain: a well-executed, legible, Oyster-flavoured integrated sports watch under USD 300. Only minor quibbles are its heft and a fiddly flush crown, and it is worth the hassle of sourcing internationally.

Suits: Buyers wanting an affordable integrated sports watch that dresses up well

What the review says, point by point
Case & proportionsmixed
  • Considers 40mm by 11.7mm ideal proportions for a modern sports watch.
  • Finds the flush crown nearly impossible to wind manually and fiddly to pull out.
  • Still thinks the crown looks slick enough to forgive its usability issues.
Wearabilitymixed
  • Surprised by how weighty it is on the wrist.
  • Got used to the weight quickly and generally prefers substantial steel watches.
Bracelet & strappositive
  • Finds the integrated bracelet well made and comfortable, wrapping nicely around the wrist.
Dialpositive
  • Silver hands and indices contrast well against the black dial.
  • Rates legibility as excellent, near dive-watch level.
  • Appreciates the magnified date and restrained dial text as minimal and stylish.
Movementpositive
  • Sees the Calibre 8210 as an entry-level but reliable, trouble-free workhorse.
  • Likes the visual punch of the gold-toned movement through the caseback, despite no decoration.
  • Considers the movement fully acceptable given the price.
Designpositive
  • Enjoys the Rolex Oyster vibe, considering it a positive.
  • Feels it has more grandeur than comparable Seiko 5 models thanks to integrated design, finish and cyclops.
Originalitymixed
  • Notes Datejust similarity but rejects calling it a clone.
Finishing & buildpositive
  • Feels the low price doesn't compromise build quality or design.
Versatilitypositive
  • Works both dressed up and down, but especially shines dressed up.
Valuepositive
  • Calls the sub-USD 300 price phenomenal for such a well-executed in-house watch.
  • Says quibbles would matter only at a much higher price; at this price it's a steal.
  • Limited availability requires importing, but deems it worth the hassle.
Compared with
  • Seiko 5 (comparable models): Tsuyosa has more grandeur via integrated design, finish and cyclops.
  • Citizen Series 8: Series 8 has an edge in refinement and movements.
  • Rolex Datejust: Dial is similar in style but not a clone.

Citizen Enters the Affordable Integrated Bracelet Arena with the NJ015 Series "Tsuyosa"

ArticleNewsMay 2023Zach Kazan

PositiveRecommends, with caveats

In a launch piece written without evident hands-on time, the writer sees the Tsuyosa as an appealing, colourful, affordable integrated-bracelet option that undercuts the Tissot PRX. The writer likes small quirks like the cyclops but notes 50m water resistance may deter some.

Suits: Buyers wanting an affordable, colourful sporty everyday integrated-bracelet watch

Not a review of the watch in hand (news, a guide or a reaction), so it isn't counted.

What the review says, point by point
Designpositive
  • Views the vaguely vintage design as feeling fully contemporary given how common the style is.
  • Appreciates the yellow, green and turquoise options beyond standard neutral colours.
Case & proportionspositive
  • Judges from images that the case appears curvier and less structured than the PRX.
  • Finds the cyclops date magnifier unexpected and charming.
Wearabilitypositive
  • Anticipates a comfortable fit but visually imposing presence, as integrated designs wear larger.
Originalitymixed
  • Notes a passing resemblance to Tissot's PRX line.
  • Points to small idiosyncrasies, like the near-flush 4 o'clock crown, that differentiate it.
Functionalitymixed
  • Considers 50m enough for nearly everyone likely to wear it.
  • Warns the rating could be a deal breaker for those wanting 100m security.
Valuepositive
  • Expects the sub-$500 price to earn it spots on recommended lists.
  • Notes it undercuts comparable automatic PRX models.
Compared with
  • Tissot PRX (automatic): Similar look, but Citizen is cheaper with a curvier case.

PositiveRecommends, with caveats

The reviewer considers the Tsuyosa a solid, well-finished affordable integrated-bracelet watch that wears true to size. Weak points are the cheap clasp, 50m water resistance, no hacking and modest lume. It is worth it at around $250–300 but not at $400+.
